Concerning children, and the absence of learned fear

11:1

Now children came often to Christopher,

for they had not yet been told

what to avoid.

11:2

They asked him simple things,

and he answered simply.

11:3

They did not mock him,

nor stare,

nor avert their eyes.

11:4

One asked,

"Why do grown people look away?"

11:5

And Christopher answered,

"Because they were taught to fear

what they did not understand."

11:6

Another asked,

"Is the body bad?"

11:7

And he said,

"No more than hands

or feet."

11:8

The children nodded,

and went back to their play.

11:9

And I saw that they carried no burden

until it was given to them.

11:10

Christopher never instructed them to imitate him,

nor warned them against clothing.

11:11

He only corrected cruelty

and praised kindness.

11:12

And I learned that shame is not born with us,

but placed upon us

with carelessness.
