Concerning public reaction, and restraint without defense

15:1

After these things, word spread quickly through the village,

and not all who spoke had seen for themselves.

15:2

Some whispered,

and some laughed,

and some pretended not to notice.

15:3

My wife walked as she always had,

speaking little,

offering no explanation.

15:4

Some avoided her,

and some stared,

and a few greeted her as before.

15:5

When asked why she did this thing,

she answered only,

"It is my choice."

15:6

And when pressed further,

she said nothing.

15:7

For she remembered Christopher's words,

that understanding cannot be transferred by force.

15:8

Christopher did not follow her into town,

nor did he stand in her defense.

15:9

Yet he did not hide,

nor change his way.

15:10

And I saw that he trusted truth

to endure without protection.

15:11

Some grew accustomed,

and some did not.

15:12

But no riot arose,

and no law was broken.

15:13

Thus I learned that scandal often feeds on response,

and weakens when denied it.
