Concerning winter, necessity, and the return without shame

17:1

When winter came,

the air hardened,

and the field no longer welcomed bare skin.

17:2

Christopher gathered garments

as one gathers tools,

without ceremony.

17:3

My wife did likewise,

not in regret,

but in readiness.

17:4

No one remarked upon this change,

for necessity requires no explanation.

17:5

She wore what warmth demanded,

and no more.

17:6

And when spring returned,

she chose again according to need,

not habit.

17:7

Christopher said to me,

"Freedom that cannot return

is merely another rule."

17:8

He said,

"Shame insists on permanence.

Wisdom allows movement."

17:9

Thus clothing returned without apology,

and departed without rebellion.

17:10

And I saw that the teaching was never nakedness,

but honesty.

17:11

And that a thing freely chosen

may also be freely set aside.

17:12

So the seasons passed,

and Christopher remained unchanged,

though his appearance varied.

17:13

And I understood that maturity

is not found in extremes,

but in discernment.
