Concerning the first imitation and the error of haste

5:1

Now there was a young man of the village

who watched Christopher from a distance.

5:2

And without asking,

he cast aside his garments

and came into the field.

5:3

The people whispered,

and laughter followed him,

and some were offended.

5:4

The young man said,

"I will live as you live,

for you are righteous."

5:5

But Christopher did not rejoice at this.

5:6

He said to him,

"Why have you done this thing?"

5:7

The young man answered,

"Because I wish to be free from sin."

5:8

Christopher said,

"Then you have mistaken the lesson."

5:9

"For freedom from shame

is not freedom from desire,

and removing a garment

does not remove a heart."

5:10

The young man said,

"But you do this."

5:11

And Christopher answered,

"I did not begin here.

I arrived."

5:12

"For discipline precedes simplicity,

and understanding comes before example."

5:13

He told him,

"Put on what you have cast aside,

and return to your work."

5:14

"For to imitate without knowing why

is to trade one law for another."

5:15

The young man was ashamed,

and this time rightly so,

for his haste had wounded him.

5:16

And Christopher walked with him until he was steady.

5:17

Thus I learned that wisdom does not invite copying,

but comprehension.
