Concerning the quiet return, and questions asked without defense

7:1

Some time passed,

and the field changed with the season,

but Christopher remained as before.

7:2

One evening, as the sun lowered,

a woman came to the edge of the field

and did not call out.

7:3

It was my wife,

and she stood at a distance,

as one who does not wish to intrude.

7:4

Christopher saw her and did not approach,

but waited until she spoke.

7:5

And she said,

"I did not come because my husband asked,

nor because you invited me."

7:6

And he answered,

"Then you have come freely."

7:7

She said,

"I have thought on what you said before,

about shame and choice,

and it has troubled me."

7:8

Christopher replied,

"Trouble is not always harm.

Sometimes it is movement."

7:9

She asked him,

"How does one know

whether fear is wisdom

or merely habit?"

7:10

And he answered,

"Wisdom grows quieter with time.

Fear grows louder."

7:11

She said,

"I do not wish to be like you."

7:12

And Christopher smiled,

saying,

"That is good."

7:13

"For God did not make many of me,

but many of you."

7:14

She asked,

"Then why does your way unsettle me?"

7:15

And he said,

"Because it stands where you were taught not to look."

7:16

She was silent for a long while.

7:17

Then she said,

"I fear shame more than sin."

7:18

And Christopher answered,

"That is the beginning of honesty."

7:19

She returned home without instruction,

but not without peace.

7:20

And I saw that wisdom does not always arrive loudly,

nor leave a mark that others can name.
