On writing at night, and the danger of mistaking refuge for arrival

6:1

At night, when the work was finished

and the fields lay quiet,

I wrote.

6:2

I told myself it was discipline,

but I knew it was also shelter.

6:3

For words move more easily

than bodies.

6:4

I wrote until my hands ached,

and the ache pleased me,

for it felt earned.

6:5

Yet I wondered

whether I was walking with words

to avoid walking with life.

6:6

One morning, I brought the pages to Christopher

and placed them before him.

6:7

He did not reach for them.

6:8

I said,

"These are the things I have learned."

6:9

He answered,

"Then they belong to you."

6:10

I said,

"But they are about you."

6:11

Christopher replied,

"They are about how you see."

6:12

I asked,

"Do you not wish to correct me?"

6:13

He said,

"A man's truth cannot be corrected

without becoming a lie."

6:14

I said,

"But what if I misunderstand you?"

6:15

He answered,

"Then you will write that misunderstanding honestly."

6:16

He said,

"I have learned also."

6:17

I asked,

"What have you learned?"

6:18

He replied,

"That every person carries

their own version of the same light."

6:19

"And that even my words,

once heard,

are no longer mine."

6:20

He added,

"If your book leads someone closer to themselves,

it will have done enough."

6:21

I gathered my pages

and felt both relieved

and exposed.

6:22

For I understood then

that writing could be a bridge,

or a hiding place.
