On correction without doctrine, and freedom freely given

7:1

Myriam continued to work beside me in the fields,

moving my chair with ease,

as if it had always belonged there.

7:2

I asked her one day,

"Would you read what I have written?"

7:3

She said,

"If you are ready to change it."

7:4

She read carefully,

without hurry.

7:5

At last she closed the pages

and looked at me sharply.

7:6

"You described me," she said.

7:7

I answered,

"I thought it honest."

7:8

She said,

"You described what can be seen."

7:9

"And what should I have written?" I asked.

7:10

She replied,

"My name."

7:11

"For looks fade,

but the heart is the work."

7:12

She handed the pages back to me

and waited.

7:13

I changed the text.

7:14

Later, as we worked, I asked her,

"Why did you never marry?"

7:15

She said,

"Because every man wants to catch me."

7:16

"And I do not wish to be caught."

7:17

I said,

"But I am bound to a chair."

7:18

She smiled and answered,

"Indeed."

7:19

"You are the one man

unable to catch me."

7:20

"So that you may only take my freedom

if my freedom is freely given."

7:21

I looked at her then,

and did not write.

7:22

After a long moment, I asked,

"Do you want to give me your freedom?"

7:23

She answered,

"Like I have never wanted to."

7:24

And the field did not change,

but I did.
